So a friend of mine made a gentle enquiry about doing a Dreamweaver/Flash course with these guys, and they sent a pushy salesman round who pressured her into signing a contract that turned out to be a loan and it’s all just very dodgy. I did some looking around, and found the following links that I recommend anyone reads before signing up for a course with these guys:
To get straight to the point - I think the course is overpriced for what it is, that the training its offerring won’t help you get a job, and that the company offerring it are highly reminiscent of the distance learning scam companies I’ve heard about. This is an investigation into the organisation:
Here are some threads where people have complained about HLC (some go on a bit):
Here’s a video from a guy who had a bad experience from a different but very similar company, explaining what happened:
I also asked a few web design friends whether they thought the course was worth over £1000, here are their replies:
- uber dubious, she’ll have no work experience, and the folk I know who’ve done similar said there’s no support while you’re learning
- She’d be better off spending 100quid on some good tech books to read on the loo.
- It may be, but I wouldn’t say that just because you can use Dreamweaver you’re a web developer. Being able to code is v important.
Incidentally, there are loads of brilliant, free resources for people looking to get into web stuff on the internet. Here are a few to start you off:
- http://htmldog.com/ - Start here: a great introduction to HTML and CSS - check out their tutorials. (They have a book too)
- http://www.smashingmagazine.com/ - A website with lots of articles about many aspects of web design.
- http://www.alistapart.com/ - Lots of detailed articles about the latest trends and techniques in web design.
And remember the golden rule of learning web design: if you don’t understand something, Google it!
