UK Treasure Act 1996: Finders, keepers?

Finders of legally defined ‘treasure’ must report their find to their local coroner within fourteen days. An inquest led by the coroner then determines whether the find constitutes treasure or not. If it is declared to be treasure then the owner must offer the item for sale to a museum at a price set by an independent board of antiquities experts. Only if a museum expresses no interest in the item, or is unable to purchase it, the owner can retain it. Click through for the definitions of treasure…

Unusual copyright laws in the UK

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children indefinitely retains the rights to payments of royalties for performances of Peter Pan - this privilege is explicitly written into the UK copyright Act.

Printing the King James bible in the UK must be authorised by the Crown or its agents, by royal prerogative.

The St. Nazaire Raid

A highly successful British seaborne attack on the heavily defended docks of St. Nazaire in occupied France on the night of March 28, 1942 during World War II.

The obsolete destroyer HMS Campbeltown commanded by Stephen Halden Beattie and accompanied by 18 shallow draft boats, rammed the St. Nazaire lock gates and was blown up, ending use of the dock. Commandos landed on the docks and destroyed other dock structures before attempting to fight their way out.

Home Learning College are dodgy: here’s why.

So a friend of mine made a gentle enquiry about doing a Dreamweaver/Flash course with these guys, and they sent a pushy salesman round who pressured her into signing a contract that turned out to be a loan and it’s all just very dodgy. I did some looking around, and found the following links that I recommend anyone reads before signing up for a course with these guys:

To get straight to the point - I think the course is overpriced for what it is, that the training its offerring won’t help you get a job, and that the company offerring it are highly reminiscent of the distance learning scam companies I’ve heard about. This is an investigation into the organisation:

Here are some threads where people have complained about HLC (some go on a bit):

Here’s a video from a guy who had a bad experience from a different but very similar company, explaining what happened:

I also asked a few web design friends whether they thought the course was worth over £1000, here are their replies:

  • uber dubious, she’ll have no work experience, and the folk I know who’ve done similar said there’s no support while you’re learning
  • She’d be better off spending 100quid on some good tech books to read on the loo.
  • It may be, but I wouldn’t say that just because you can use Dreamweaver you’re a web developer. Being able to code is v important.

Incidentally, there are loads of brilliant, free resources for people looking to get into web stuff on the internet. Here are a few to start you off:

  1. http://htmldog.com/ - Start here: a great introduction to HTML and CSS - check out their tutorials. (They have a book too)
  2. http://www.smashingmagazine.com/ - A website with lots of articles about many aspects of web design.
  3. http://www.alistapart.com/ - Lots of detailed articles about the latest trends and techniques in web design.

And remember the golden rule of learning web design: if you don’t understand something, Google it!
